For those brave of heart, try a rigorous hike to the foot hills of the Maya Mountains; float down on inner tubes and waterproof vest on the gushing rivers streams into the mysterious caves systems; and enter into the Xibalba – the Under World of Maya and feel their presence as your local guide points out the many burial chambers, sacrificial alters of the Shamans, pottery, stoneware and other relics of the once superior astrological civilization of the ancient past. Then be whisked away high above the lush rainforest or wind down for a tasty light lunch and a well deserved ice cold beer.

Lamanai, located on the New River in Orange Walk District, is known for being the longest continually-occupied site in Mesoamerica. Occupied from 1500B.C. to the present day.
Lamanai meaning drowned mosquito was probably and incorrect translation and by changing the name slightly to Lama’ an/ayin meaning submerged crocodile should be the correct name of the sight as numerous representations of crocodiles were unearthed in the excavations.
Some of Lamanai’s ruins are some of the oldest in Belize. Archaeologists believe the Mayan site was of moderate size as early as 1500 BC. However, some of its later structures were occupied as recently as the 18th century AD, signifying over 3500 years of occupation.
