Explore the mystique of ancient under ground caves tubing along the winding waters of the Cave Branch River.

Cave tubing in Belize is a pure adrenaline rush of excitement and adventure matched by none other given the country’s richly diverse neo tropical rainforests, ecosystems and cultural heritage. Inland adventure options ranges from river tubing into a complex network of caves, rappelling down sink holes several hundred feet deep; zip lining across the magnificent Maya Mountains over evergreen canopies and basins to journeys back in time of the ancient Maya and their thousand old traditions. For those brave of heart, try a rigorous hike to the foot hills of the Maya Mountains; float down on inner tubes and waterproof vest on the gushing rivers streams into the mysterious caves systems; and enter into the Xibalba – the Under World of Maya and feel their presence as your local guide points out the many burial chambers, sacrificial alters of the Shamans, pottery, stoneware and other relics of the once superior astrological civilization of the ancient past. Then be whisked away high above the lush rainforest or wind down for a tasty light lunch and a well deserved ice cold beer.

Discovering Lamanai on a day tour From Maruba Resort & Jungle Spa is like living an Indiana Jones Adventure.  The day starts with a 20  mile car ride on back roads to the New River,  from there boat 25 miles on a jungle to the ruins covered by 3 level canopy tropical rainforest.  Hike through the jungle then a clearing with a large temple to explore then hike some more and another clearing with even a taller temple,  and hike more and discover more including wildlife like howler monkeys and toucans.

Lamanai, located on the New River in Orange Walk District, is known for being the longest continually-occupied site in Mesoamerica.  Occupied from 1500B.C. to the present day.

Lamanai meaning drowned mosquito was probably and incorrect translation and by changing the name slightly to  Lama’ an/ayin meaning submerged crocodile should be the correct name of the sight as numerous representations of crocodiles were unearthed in the excavations.

Some of Lamanai’s ruins are some of the oldest in Belize.  Archaeologists believe the Mayan site was of moderate size as early as 1500 BC. However, some of its later structures were occupied as recently as the 18th century AD, signifying over 3500 years of occupation.
